Pre-Release Workforce Empowerment Program

In 2018, Prospera Reentry launched a pre-release workforce empowerment program designed to address the staggering 70% unemployment rate returning citizens face upon release from prison.  This innovative initiative allows incarcerated individuals, during their last 90 days in prison, to participate in an externship with private companies that enables them to receive:

  • Real-world work experience

  • Transferrable skills

  • Monthly evaluations

  • Employer referrals

  • Re-entry resources

The goal of the program is to help returning citizens gain stable employment, which is proven to reduce recidivism. The program has experienced early success and garnered both local and international attention, receiving the Dominion Energy 2018 Community Impact Award and being featured at the International Corrections and Prisons Association’s summit held in Quebec, Canada.

Post-Release Education Program

Prospera Reentry has partnered with Ashland University to provide employment skills-based certificates and accredited associate’s and bachelor’s degree programming to individuals recently released from prison.  Through this unique collaboration, Ashland University has agreed to waive all tuition costs and fees above the Pell Grant, so that Prospera Reentry students receive this training absolutely free.

Coursework is conducted at Prospera Reentry’s Cleveland location with a combination of live and virtual instruction utilizing the cutting-edge Blackboard Learning Management System.  Not only does education make returning citizens more employable, but according to a study conducted by the Rand Corporation, it reduces the likelihood of returning to prison by over 43%.
